Maui Oceanfront starts at 5 a.m. in Wailea and runs 42.2 mostly flat kilometers toward Launiupoko, with winter whale views across the channel. We like the Boston-qualifying profile, but the narrow highway shoulder and point-to-point transport need real planning. January typically moves from 19 to 27 degrees. Entry is about $140, and staying near the start makes race morning easier while leaving supporters well away from the finish.

Why we'd pick it
- 150 m of climbing: rolling, not pancake-flat.
- Open registration — no lottery to lose.
- A non-racing partner gets a real weekend here — 5/5.
- Race day usually sits 19–27°C, about 25% chance of rain.
The course
The marathon starts at the Shops at Wailea, makes a short southern turn, then follows South Kihei Road and Highway 30 above Maalaea Bay to Launiupoko Beach Park. It is a mostly flat, Boston-qualifying point-to-point with January whale views. The shoulder can be narrow, the start is early, and transport between the distant start and finish needs planning.
