Waiting at the start

Allow for the early trip and time standing in the start village. Follow NYRR’s permitted-item instructions.

Running

Use the current forecast when it becomes available. Historical averages cannot predict this year’s wind or rain.

Cheering and reunion

Supporters spend more time standing still. Save warm, dry layers for the runner after the finish.

Weather notes

Adjust effort, not the training

Wind on the Verrazzano and Queensboro bridges and warm sun on First Avenue can matter more than the headline temperature. Use effort over pace on exposed climbs, then reassess after halfway.

If the day is warmer than the training block prepared for, change the goal before the start rather than negotiating with it at mile 18. If it is cold and wet, protect dexterity, fueling access, and dry layers without testing new equipment.

  • Headwind: shorten the stride and use groups without surging to catch them.
  • Warm sun: begin fluids and cooling before thirst becomes the signal.
  • Rain: protect the phone, bib, feet, and post-finish clothing plan.
